The essentials
The visa lets you enter and start working, but it expires soon: the D/AM2 visa is first valid for 90 days. To stay longer you need a residence permit for work (permis de ședere în scop de muncă). You request it in Romania, after you enter, and before your visa expires.
The steps
- Check the date on your visa and count the days you have left.
- Ask for an appointment (programare) at the office of the General Inspectorate for Immigration (IGI) in the county where you live. On the IGI portal you can also upload your documents before you go.
- Gather the documents in the list below.
- Go to the appointment. The IGI checks that your stay is legal, your contract, your salary and that labour law is respected.
- Collect your permit. It lasts as long as your contract, and it is your identity document in Romania.
Documents
- Passport with the work visa.
- Work contract.
- Proof of where you live, such as the rental contract or the document for the housing your employer gives you.
- Proof of your health insurance.
- Receipt for the fee.
The IGI may ask for something else in your case. Ask when you make the appointment.
Afterwards: what you must report
Any change of employer or address, or the end of your contract, must be reported to the authorities.
To renew it
If you keep working, the permit can be extended. Ask for the extension before it expires: do not wait for the last day.

What often helps
For guidance only This comes from other people’s experience, not from an official source.
- According to the Romanian press, the permit fee can be paid at CEC Bank counters or cash machines, or online on ghiseul.ro. Confirm the amount with the IGI.
- Your residence permit shows your CNP, the personal number that the bank, the doctor and other offices will ask for.
- Appointments can take weeks. Ask for yours as soon as you arrive.
