This cannot be done right now

Applications to extend your residence permit after a change of employer that must go through the WorkinRomania platform cannot be submitted now, because the official list of occupations with staff shortages is suspended. The IGI has said it will review them one by one when the platform works again, taking into account that the employer could not register.

The essentials

Your residence permit for work is linked to your employer. You can change jobs, but with conditions, and any change must be reported.

Changing employer

  • By resigning, once you have worked at least 6 months since you started.
  • Before 6 months, only in justified cases of serious breach by the employer. For example, if they do not pay you or do not respect your contract. Keep the proof.
  • Report it: any change of employer must be reported to the authorities.

If your contract ends

  • You can generally stay in Romania for up to 90 days to find another job, if you do not receive unemployment benefit.
  • If you came through an agency, in that time it must try to offer you at least two job offers.
  • Report the end of the contract to the authorities.

Your permit and your insurance

  • The permit can be extended if you keep working. Ask for the extension before it expires.
  • If you lose your right of residence, you also lose public health insurance. That is why you should not miss the deadlines.

If your employer abuses you

You do not have to put up with it to keep your permit. Report it: the contacts are in Help.

What often helps

For guidance only This comes from other people’s experience, not from an official source.

  • Before you resign, ask the new employer to confirm in writing.
  • Ask the IGI in writing which documents you need in your case. The rules are changing in 2026.

Always check the official source before a procedure.
